He quickly shuts the door and relays the information to the group, they then form a strategy and Quevven throws open the door and begins muttering words causing a vertical column of golden flames burning a group of three orcs.
Now the group can all see in the room begins on a platform overlooking an enormous chamber, two everburning torches sit in iron sconces on either side of the iron door set in the center of the west wall. The ceiling, from the main level, is twenty feet overhead. Branching out to the south and north is a floor made of iron mesh which allows sight to the level below. Beneath the stone walk and scaffolding is a lower level, about twenty feet below the doors leading into and out of this room, and reached by twin staircases descending from the eastern platform. Two ten-foot wide pipes run across the lower level of the room, emerging from the eastern wall and exiting through the west.
All eyes are on the group, the orcs turn to face them, growling with rage and drooling with anticipation for the kill. Behind and below the orcs lies a sunken section of the chamber, where they see iron tubes as tall as a man running across the room. On the north side of the pit, they see several large beetles, their mottled hides glowing red as if aflame. Sprawled across the floor is the beheaded remains of a half-elf presumably a member of the Farstriders. A short human figure wearing a long black cloak is examining an iron wheel connected to the southern pipe.
Yuriel is the next in and he quickly focuses arcane power swirling around his blade and outward toward you’re the orcs them in an inferno. Gor quickly follows behind and swings his axes at an orc who avoided the fire and he drops to the floor Daeniroth moves in and attacks and simultaneously compels Yuriel to advance further in.
The room is quickly filled with the sound of battle as the orc forces advance on the well positioned group. The groups “make them come to us” plan seemingly working as the orcs were forced to come in waves and were never able to surround the group. The trouble came from the fire beetles who sent blasts of fire at the group, and a few bow carrying orcs who peppered the group with shots. While the orcs and heroes battled the cloaked figure must have finished his objective as he began making his way to the grating to get in on the battle.
As he reaches the fighting forces he steps forward as he does he seems to be surrounded by darkness and it makes it very difficult to gauge where to strike. Gor does his best though and misses, he does notice and “E” stitched onto the figures cloak as the figure passes by. The cloaked figure steps to Quevven and thrusts a dagger into his side easily piercing the armor. The group now confronted with a battle on two sides quickly dispatches most of the orc forces. Their plan to use Quevven’s Orbmaster’s Incendiary Detonation zone of fire to impede the beetles movement from the north backfires as the fire beetles walk through the fire unaffected.
But it does burn the shadow figure as he was forced to move into it by Gor and Yuriel’s superior footwork. Queven has a tough time with the beetles and falls to their attacks but Daeniroth was able to quickly get him back in the land of the living. The group begins dropping the last foes, and with all his allies gone the lone orc archer quickly drops his weapon and runs out the open door to east.
The group looks around at the bloodshed they had caused and each the have to get to the nexus quickly as their stamina was fading. Their search of the dead and turns up a few items, and Daeniroth attempts to undo whatever the cloaked figure did by reopening the valve.
